We’re looking to cast the characters…
SAM: Female | Mid 30’s | Deaf | BSL user
Sam is a single, working mum, juggling looking after her young son, Zach, with a full time job. Her job is stressful with long hours and often requires her to take work home. Sam is a loving mother with a creative side, but she suffers from anxiety, being under-pressure and over-stretched, she has started having regular panic attacks. She is strong, independent and keen not to show anyone her vulnerability, until events force her to acknowledge, to herself and others, that she is struggling.
CHRIS: Male | Mid 30’s | Hearing | Voice & SSE
Chris is Sam’s ex and the father of Zach. He has regular contact with Zach and shares custody. He is reasonable, open and playful. He still cares for Sam and wants to support her. He is hugely protective of his son. When he thinks Sam can’t cope he tries to take full custody, but relents later when he understands the full story and shares responsibility.
ANN: Female | 60’s | Deaf | SSE & BSL user
Ann is Sam’s mother. Strong and proud, she worries about the judgement of others. Always impeccably smart and well turned out, she can appear disapproving but her harsh exterior hides a soft centre.
DEREK: Male | 60’s | Deaf | BSL user
Derek is Sam’s Father. He is a quiet, introverted man and is somewhat overshadowed by his wife. Though he may not be outspoken, he feels things deeply, loves his wife and daughter very much. He also loves the TV and hiding in his car!
DOT: Female | 70/80’s | Deaf | BSL user
Dot is an elderly client of Sam’s. At the beginning of the film, Dot’s energy is in complete contrast to Sam’s – she is calm, grounded and present. She has a positive energy, is creative and loves colour. She is the first person Sam feels safe to confide in.
THERAPIST: Male/Female | 30’s – 60’s | Deaf | BSL User
Professional, friendly, and grounded in reality, they are un-shockable with a sense of humour.
